Standing Rock Cultural Arts and downtown businesses will present Kent's 14th Annual Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 14, featuring music by The Kent Shindig All Stars and the Blk Skwirl Akordion Klub, and magic by VIP Magic. The Madonio Family Animal Welfare Trust presents Dogs Days of Summer 2017, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 19 at Hometown Bank Plaza, downtown Kent. Strut Your Mutt Dog Parade, APL and Rose's Rescue adoptions, best dressed dog contest, vet booths, pet product vendors, food trucks, live music, family activities and giveaways, Thirsty Dog Beer, Handel's Ice Cream, Popped! Theater

Porthouse Theatre, on the grounds of Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, will present "Newsies" through Aug. 13. Adapted from the Disney film of the same name, "Newsies" tells of newsboy Jack Kelly who dreams of a better life far from selling newspapers on the streets of turn-of-the-century New York City. When publishing giants Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise prices and endanger the newsboys' livelihoods, Jack and his band of newsies find a cause to fight for.
