Investigators are still working to discover the cause of a fire early this morning that closed The Circle Restaurant in Deerfield.

The restaurant, at 1290 S.R. 14, is closed until further notice, according to a post on its Facebook page.

Deerfield Fire Chief Brian Allison said a worker cleaning inside the business on the Deerfield Circle at approximately 12:30 a.m. reported a wall inside the business caught fire as she was working.

"She heard a pop and sparking, and she looked back and the wall was on fire," Allison said.

Firefighters from Deerfield, Atwater, Palmyra and Berlin Center, along with Portage County sheriff's deputies and investigators from the Portage County Fire Investigation Unit responded, he said.

Upon arrival, the entire building was filled with smoke and there was fire behind the counter, having worked its way into the ceiling, Allison said.

Crews worked quickly to put water on the blaze, he said, and were still on the scene putting out "hot spots" when customers started to arrive Friday morning.

"People were there, showing up to eat, and we're there squirting water in the ceiling," Allison said.

The cause of fire has not been determined, but "we're leaning toward electrical," he said.

A damage estimate will be determined once the restaurant's insurance company has a chance to review the scene.
